Privacy Policy

Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what Discern collects, what it does not, and how your information is handled. In plain terms: your discernment is yours. It is stored on your device, and only what is described under “The faith-friendly companion” is sent.
What is stored on your device
The people you add, your notes, your reflections, your standards, and your prayer list are stored on your device. We do not keep them on our servers. Parts of them are sent only as described under “The faith-friendly companion”. This is the heart of how Discern is built: your private discernment stays private.
The faith-friendly companion
When you talk with the companion, Discern sends your message, with the last 16 messages of the conversation, to our own small server, which passes it to Google's Gemini AI model to write the reply. Each message also carries your church background, how central faith is to you in dating, and the first names of the people you have added, so the companion can tell whom you mean. When you talk about one of those people, or ask for that person's monthly summary, Discern also sends that one person's file: their first name and gender, how you met, where each of your Musts, Wants and Likes stands for them with your note on it, their score once it is shown, your last six check-ins (the date and what changed, not your written notes), what your latest reflection found and what is still unknown, and each moment you logged, with its title and date. When you add someone new, Discern sends the same way, once, to write their first reflection: their first name and gender, your church background, how central faith is to you in dating, your Musts, Wants and Likes, and the answers you type to the questions about them. It never sends your journal notes, your prayer list, the files of the other people, or your own name, age or gender. Our server stores none of it and keeps no log of it: it passes the request on and returns the reply. Google processes it to write the reply under its Gemini API terms for paid use: Google does not use it to improve its products, and keeps it only for a limited time, to detect abuse and meet legal requirements.
Information we do not collect
Discern does not require an account to use its core features. We do not ask for your contacts, and we do not sell personal information.
Subscriptions and the App Store
If you subscribe, the purchase is handled by Apple through your Apple Account. We receive the information Apple provides to manage your subscription, through RevenueCat (see Analytics). We never see your card or payment details. Apple's own privacy terms cover that part of the process.
Analytics
Tracking: only if you allow it in Apple's tracking prompt, your device's advertising ID is used to see which ad campaign brought the install. The app uses AppsFlyer to see which ad brought an install and whether a trial or subscription follows, with its product, price and order number. AppsFlyer receives an ID it makes for this install, Apple's ID for our apps on your device, basic device details such as the model, system version and IP address, Apple's Search Ads attribution, and these events; the advertising ID only if you allow tracking. RevenueCat handles subscriptions: from the subscription screen on, it receives an anonymous app user ID, your purchases, the AppsFlyer ID, Apple's ID for our apps on your device, your IP address and system version, whether you allowed tracking, and Apple's Search Ads attribution token; the advertising ID only if you allow tracking. Neither receives your people, your notes, your reflections or your prayers. This website uses no analytics.
Children
Discern is intended for adults dating with marriage in mind. It is not directed at children.
